Finalists announced for ECO-UNESCO Young Environmentalist Awards 2011
Young people from across Ireland will be honoured at the 12th annual ECO-UNESCO Young Environmentalist Awards Showcase and Ceremony on May 24th in the Mansion House. From 4,000 young people who registered 55 groups have been selected for the final. The annual awards programme run by ECO-UNESCO, Ireland’s environmental education and youth organisation, recognises and rewards young people that carry out local environmental action projects.
From Carbon Footprint Apps to recycling awareness song ‘It’s a (w)rap!’, guerrilla gardening, ECO-fashion shows to balloon races and everything in between, it’s all covered by this year’s talented batch of Young Environmentalist Awards finalists.
ECO-UNESCO selected 55 projects from thousands of entrants hailing from every county on the island. Now in it’s twelfth year, the programme has provided thousands of young people, aged 10 -18, an opportunity to take action and raise awareness in their own community on issues that matter the most to them.
“We are extremely proud of all the young environmentalists participating in this year’s programme,” said Elaine Nevin, National Director of ECO-UNESCO. “All of the shortlisted projects show a great deal of creativity and innovation in their approach to protecting the environment and promoting environmental awareness.”
ECO-UNESCO will celebrate the achievements of Ireland’s Young Environmentalists on Tuesday 24th May in the Round Room of the Mansion House in Dublin. The public is invited to view the shortlisted projects from 11:30 am-3:00 pm during the Showcase opened by the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Gerry Breen. Later that afternoon, winners of the Young Environmentalist Awards 2010 will be announced in an awards ceremony hosted by RTE’s Aidan Power.
Members of the public can choose which group of young people win ‘The People’s Choice Award” at the ECO-UNESCO Young Environmentalist Awards 2011. People logging on to ecounesco.ie can view the fantastic shortlisted projects, and vote online for the group they think most deserves to win the award and get the chance to have their project viewed by VIP Judges at ECO-UNESCO’s Young Environmentalist Awards 2011 showcase and ceremony in Dublin on May 24th.
