Young Environmentalist Awards team visit a Limerick school for their Environment Day!
On Wednesday 10th Feb, we visited the Young Environmentalist Awards group ‘Green Buddies’ in their school in Limerick. They along with the help of their teacher Helen Ahern had organised a fun Environment Day where all the school got involved, teachers and pupils included! The day was jam-packed with a range of workshops about the environment inwhich both us and the students from all the years learned alot. However, the real highlight of the day was when the Green Buddies brought us out to their school garden and proudly opened their polytunnel to us. We crouched down and entered to find a variety of wonderful potted flowers, compost and a range of gardening tools. All the necessary items for turning their basic grass area into diverse productive soil. They had grown flowers to give to the local hospital and were in the process of potting shamrocks to sell for St Patrick’s Day- a clever and sustainable small business which would help fund their plans to grow vegetables to potentially sell at the local farmer’s market!!
Once we’d squeezed out of the polytunnel, the Buddies excitedly skipped over to another project they had set-up with the help of their teacher Helen- a rainwater collector! Another sustainable tool to be used for thier environmental gardening.
As if we weren’t impressed already, the Green Buddies pointed out a beautifully planted area of flowers and grasses surrounding a statue. They went on to explain that this area had been overgrown and looked unsightly for around 10 years so it was no mean feat restoring it to a beautifully visual feature of their much improved garden!!!
After leaving the school feeling highly ellated, we caught our train back to Dublin with such deep feelings of hope and happiness that the young people of Limerick were taking environmental action! We are very excited to receive their Young Environmentalist Awards Project and visiting the school and thier fantastic garden again to see the growth of not only the flowers but also the awareness of the environment throughout the school! Well done Green Buddies and their teacher Helen!!!
