Earth Day in Portmarnock

Portmarnock GroupDespite not being able to find the sign (my fault I am sure) I eventually met with the group of four Portmarnock Community School students eager to show me their project.

There is something satisfying about knowing that a group has grown in strength based on its ideals. Slowly but surely, the group at Portmarnock has begun to raise awareness about recycling and waste, increasing the recycling efforts of the school by a third. They also attracted new supporters who all volunteered to assist and take part in the various events held over the year.

This group didn’t sit back when faced with a challenge. Initially, they planned a fashion show, but this was overshadowed by the school musical. Instead, they turned their efforts to raising awareness and getting the entire school—from parents to students—involved in addressing the waste problems of the school.

Portmarnock's Earth Day BoardQuestion is, were they a one trick pony? Did they know today was Earth Day?

I put them to the test and they were not found wanting!

With grins the sizes of their recycling bins, they took me to the Earth Day display already up in the school. Impressive!

On a tour of school (they have a one-way corridor system, don’t you know!) they showed me their various posters, display boards and even shrubs they planted in the garden. Star Garden Bed

I bid farewell to the band of four and left in the knowledge that great things are afoot in Portmarnock. Can’t wait to see what else they come up with for next year’s Young Environmentalist Awards!
